Response to BBC article

May 2016

An article entitled Holyrood gains new powers under Scotland Act 2016" has been published this morning by the BBC. The piece includes a quote from Scotland's constitution secretary, Derek Mackay:

"On transport, we'll allow public sector operators to bid for future rail franchises and integrate the British Transport Police into Police Scotland, while retaining the specialisms that are highly valued by the rail industry and passengers."

In response to the article, and this quote in particular, your Federation has this morning issued the following:

"We fully respect and understand the devolution process but firmly believe that the most effective way to police the rail network in Scotland is through the use of the specially trained officers and staff of the British Transport Police. BTP Scotland should remain a central part of the force as this model provides the best service to the travelling public in Scotland.

"As a Federation, our priority remains the future terms and conditions of our members. We have already met with the Scottish Justice Minister and will continue to engage fully with the consultation process."

Further updates on this matter will be posted here and circulated to members.
