Conference 2001 - Awards of Excellence
Awards of Excellence - Scottish Area
Craig BUCHANAN is a constable in British Transport Police based at Kirkcaldy in Scotland.
At 10.30 p.m. on 3rd August 2000, Craig was off-duty in Greenock with his brother-in-law whom he had been visiting. Craig was passing a take-away restaurant when he saw two males at the counter, both men wearing masks and obviously attempting to rob the premises. As he approached the restaurant one of the males was backing out and Craig could see that the person was carrying a gun. Craig tackled the male with the intention of disarming him but during the struggle the male broke free and ran off accompanied his companion. Craig gave chase, noting that the second male was also carrying a gun. Craig continued to pursue the men who were now becoming excitable and urging each other to shoot at Craig.
Eventually Craig lost sight of the men but recovered a mask and property from the shop.
Subsequent enquiries resulted in the arrest of two men and at this juncture the weapons carried were found to be replicas.
Strathclyde Police Force have written to British Transport Police commending Craig for his prompt and brave actions in this instance. Craig is to be awarded a Chief Constable's Commendation.
The Scottish Area nomination for the Award of Excellence - Craig Buchanan.
