Awards of Excellence - The North West Area PC Robert Moody and PC Stewart White
At about 07.35 hours on Sunday 8th December 2002 a male person gained access to a High Level Railway Bridge at Newcastle upon
Tyne. He appeared to be in a state of intoxication and was sitting over the protective railings on a small ledge some 150 feet directly above the River Tyne. PC's White and Moody approached this person who they found to be in a very emotional state, it quickly became clear to the officers that he person intended to jump from the bridge. The officers engaged this male in conversation for over 30 minutes but were unable to persuade him to move to a place of safety.
At about 08.30hrs the mother of the male was escorted to the bridge and under strict observation was allowed to speak with her son. The male allowed his mother to approach and eventually the mother was able to place her arms around his waist however at about 08.50hrs the male was heard to say goodbye to his mother and he attempted to step backwards off the ledge. His mother grabbed hold of his clothing and the officers moved quickly to restrain the male. As the mother let go, a violent struggle with the officers ensued they were in danger of being pulled or falling from the bridge. 
After a short but intense struggle, the officers managed to pull the male to safety. There is little doubt that the prompt action by the officers, acting without regard for their own safety, prevented a fatal outcome for the male and perhaps his mother.
