On Sunday 25th May 2003 John was off duty when at about 8pm he
went into his local Co- op store. On entering the store he saw a
security guard detaining a youth for theft, the youth became violent
and a struggle ensued. John identified himself and attempted to arrest
the youth for the theft. As he was trying to restrain him 3 more youths
appeared and attacked John and tried to release their friend.
John
suffered numerous kicks and even blows from a hockey stick but
managed to hold onto one youth. On arrival of Police assistance all
the other youths were arrested near the scene of the attack. John
suffered serious injuries during this incident and is commended
for his tenacity and bravery during this sustained attack.
