Police Constable MARK DICKENS WESTERN AREA
On the 31st August 2004 whilst on mobile patrol duties Mark and Inspector Barry Dalby cam across a serious road traffic accident on the M5 in Somerset. A vehicle had left the motorway and struck as concrete pillar. The vehicle was on fire, smoking heavily with two occupants trapped inside. Whilst Inspector Dalby tackled the fire with a fire extinguisher. Mark forced his way into the vehicle staying with the trapped occupants rendering first aid and reassuring them , despite the real and serious risk of the car exploding. On arrival of the Fire Brigade with cutting equipment the occupants were released without serious injury.
Mark is commendeded for his devotion to duty without any though for his personal safety.
Shortly after this incident Mark received a commendation from Avon and Somerset Police for his actions at a Fatal Road Traffic Accident in which a motorcyclist died and a young boy was seriously injured.
