Conference 2008 - Awards of Excellence
LONDON NORTH
On the night of 23rd April 2007 Constables Jason Neilus and Louis Shuttleworth attended Waltham Cross British Rail Station in response to a call for a male causing a disturbance.
On arriving at the station they made their way to the platforms where they saw a male person about 40 yards outside the station between the running rails of the train track. This track being the express route from Stanstead Airport to London. As they made their way towards the man they suddenly became aware of a Stanstead Express bearing down on where he was standing. Whilst Louis began to signal desperately towards the train trying to stop it Jason ran to the man and tackled him. On seeing the signals the train driver applied his emergency brakes slowing down but still on a collision course. Jason managed to remove the man from the tracks s the train approached.
A violent struggle then took place with both officers trying to subdue the male. He was eventually overwhelmed and removed forcibly from the tracks, the train having stopped within feet of the struggle. He was later charged with Obstructing the Railway, Assault and Public Offences.
Unfortunately Louis Shuttleworth cannot be with us tonight due to holiday commitments but can I ask Jason to join me on stage.
