Conference 2008 - Awards of Excellence

WALES AND WESTERN

On Thursday 23rd August 2007 Police Sergeant Mike Edwards and Police Constable Guy Ellis were on duty performing a night turn at Cardiff. At about 10.50 pm they were diverted to attend Barry Town Railway Station in response to a female threatening suicide. Whilst en route the control room managed to contact the person in question who now stated that she was on the beach at Barry Island. On arriving at the beach the officers from a distance saw the female walking on the foreshore. On seeing the officers she ran into the sea, by the time the officers had reached the point where she had entered the water she had completely disappeared underneath. Both Mike and Guy made a split second decision to try and rescue her despite not having the appropriate training. Fully clothed they both ran into the sea and swam towards where she had last been seen. Luckily they made contact and she was pulled from the sea and subsequently treated by paramedics.

The sea off this area of beach is notorious for its strong and treacherous currents both Mike and Guy were extremely brave to attempt this successful rescue.

Ladies and Gentlemen Mike Edwards and Guy Ellis.
