Federation members raise thousands for charity

Charities, community groups and good causes received more than £19,000 in donations last year, thanks to players of the Federation lottery. The lottery is open to serving members and retired officers. Half the lottery proceeds are offered as prizes while the other half is distributed as grants and donations. Lottery members can apply for a donation for charitable, sporting or cultural purposes. The fund also supports several retired BTP groups and helps towards the cost of members' sporting endeavours.

Here are some examples of the activities and organisations that members have recently helped:

Outlaw Triathlon
Alex Trivino and Mike Beare received support with the cost of competing in the Police Sport UK Middle Distance Triathlon Championships in Wiltshire. The race began with a 1.2 mile open water swim, immediately followed by 56 miles around a hilly Wiltshire circuit by bike and culminated in a punishing 13.1 mile cross-country half marathon.

Alex and Mike said: "Thank you again for all of your amazing support. Triathlon is a booming sport in the UK and around the globe and demand for places to race means that costs remain high. Your help allows us to continue racing and representing our force at a national level."

AFC Crawley
Simon Walker received a donation on behalf of the AFC Crawley's under 14's team. The team needs new equipment and intend to replace their goal nets and invest in some training apparatus.

The Salvation Army
A donation was made to the Salvation Army's Christmas Appeal. The charity told us: "The Salvation Army is busy all year round, but the winter and Christmas season is a time when we really do step up our caring work. Your thoughtfulness will have helped us deliver a much-needed little bit of Christmas love to someone in need."

London Marathon
Jim Carty and Rebecca McKenna both took park in the 2021 London Marathon. Jim took part just a fortnight after completing a previous marathon - and three days after crashing his bike. Rebecca powered across the line after just six weeks' training!

Both officers received lottery donations for their chosen charities. Jim ran for Emily's Star while Rebecca ran for Child Bereavement UK.

Participation in the lottery is open to all serving members (via payroll deduction) and retired members (via Direct Debit). Prize draws are made monthly, with two draws in December, and the winning numbers are published on a regular basis.
